If you’re tired all the time, it can start to affect every part of your life.
You may be getting through the essentials – work, childcare, cooking, keeping everything ticking over, but with very little energy left for anything else.
And when you’re tired all the time, the enjoyable parts of life often disappear first. Socialising feels like effort. Exercise becomes impossible to motivate yourself for. Even things you want to do can start to feel overwhelming.
It’s no surprise that many people start wondering whether they should take an iron supplement to boost their energy.
But is iron really the answer?
Why am I tired all the time?
There are many possible reasons why someone may feel tired all the time, and iron deficiency is only one potential piece of the puzzle.
Sleep quality matters more than you think
The most obvious reason for feeling tired all the time is lack of sleep – but quality matters just as much as quantity.
You may technically be getting enough hours, but still wake up feeling exhausted, unrested, and like your cotton-wool brain just won’t function well.
The real question is: Do you actually wake up feeling refreshed?
If the answer is no, it’s important to explore why.
Blood sugar and energy
If your energy rises and crashes throughout the day, your blood sugar balance may be playing a role.
Skipping meals, relying on sugary snacks, or consuming too much caffeine can create a cycle of temporary energy highs followed by significant dips – leaving you feeling even more tired all the time.
This can also affect:
- Mood
- Concentration
- Cravings
- Stress resilience
- Sleep quality
Digestion and nutrient absorption
Even if you’re eating a healthy diet, your body still needs to properly digest and absorb those nutrients.
Poor digestion can impact how effectively you absorb nutrients involved in energy production, including:
- Iron
- Magnesium
- B vitamins
- Protein
So sometimes people are tired all the time not because they’re eating badly, but because their body isn’t able to use the nutrients in their diet efficiently.
Stress can drain energy quickly
Stress is incredibly energy-demanding.
When your body is constantly in “go mode”, dealing with work pressure, emotional stress, poor boundaries, illness, overtraining, or lack of rest, your energy reserves can become depleted over time. Assessing the demands of your lifestyle can be helpful as part of your personal picture.
Many people who feel tired all the time also realise they rarely stop.
Ask yourself:
- Do you ever properly switch off?
- Do you have downtime without guilt?
- Are you constantly pushing through exhaustion?
Could it be something else?
Sometimes persistent fatigue may relate to underlying imbalances such as:
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Chronic inflammation
- Hormonal imbalances
- Recovery after illness
Iron deficiency can absolutely contribute to feeling tired but it’s rarely the only possible explanation for feeling tired all the time.
So, should you take an iron supplement?
Many people automatically reach for iron supplements when they feel tired all the time.
And if you are genuinely deficient in iron, a good quality, well-absorbed supplement may help.
However, supplementing blindly isn’t always a good idea.
Iron is essential but too much can be harmful
Iron is a vital mineral, but it’s also one the body regulates very carefully. Excess iron is so toxic that there are multiple mechanisms in the body to ensure that our iron levels are tightly controlled, such as decreasing the amount we absorb from food when our levels are high.
Excess iron can build up in tissues such as the liver and brain and may contribute to long-term health problems. High iron levels have also been associated with increased oxidative stress and other health risks, such as increased risk of cancer.
This is why taking iron “just in case” isn’t something to do casually.

How do you know if you’re iron deficient?
Testing is important.
Standard blood tests may assess markers linked to anaemia and iron status, but interpreting iron levels is not always straightforward. Ferritin (stored iron) alone does not always tell the full story, and normal results on a basic blood test do not necessarily rule out underlying imbalances.
If you’re tired all the time, seeing your GP for initial testing can be a helpful starting point. However, in some cases, more comprehensive iron testing may be beneficial to better understand what is contributing to fatigue and whether iron is truly part of the picture.
A more in-depth assessment may help differentiate between:
- True iron deficiency
- Poor iron absorption
- Inflammation-related changes in iron markers
- Anaemia linked to chronic illness or other nutrient deficiencies
This is why it’s important not to self-prescribe iron supplements purely based on symptoms of feeling tired all the time. Understanding the why behind low energy is often far more valuable than simply taking a supplement.

What should you do if you are deficient in iron?
Rather than just taking iron supplements, it’s helpful to explore why iron deficiency developed in the first place.
Possible contributors may include:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Poor dietary intake
- Medications
- Digestive dysfunction
- Gut infections
- Low stomach acid
- Chronic inflammation
- Poor absorption
- Internal bleeding
It’s then about seeking to rebalance and support the body to manage what is going on. For example, heavy menstrual bleeding is NOT normal at any stage, although it can be common. Rather than just taking an iron supplement, every time you become deficient (which is then just a ‘sticking plaster’), it is much more helpful to look at what is driving the heavy menstrual bleeding.
Without addressing the root cause, many people end up stuck in a cycle of:
Feeling tired all the time → taking iron → temporarily improving → crashing again
Summary
If you feel tired all the time, iron deficiency may be part of the picture — but it’s rarely the whole story.
Fatigue can be influenced by many factors including:
- Sleep quality/quantity
- Stress
- Blood sugar balance
- Digestion
- Hormones
- Thyroid health
- Nutrient status
- Lifestyle demands
While iron supplements can be helpful when truly needed, they should ideally be guided by proper testing and individual assessment.
Most importantly, persistent fatigue deserves a deeper look rather than simply masking the symptoms with supplements.
